The state House of Representatives in New Hampshire, where I live, is considering a bill that would require local police to investigate crimes on college campuses following an incident last year at Franklin Pierce University where the local police went to the scene of a campus burglary only to find that the campus security people had already covered up all the evidence.
College presidents and campus security directors are lining up to testify that there are no crimes on campus and therefore the law is not needed, to which I say, total bullshit.
This big lie is not even credible on its face. We all know that high schools have armed guards posted and that students have to go through metal detectors at the doors. We know that parents and teachers keep these students on a short leash to keep them from killing each other. And then, magically, a few months later when these kids are college freshmen all this criminal activity suddenly disappears? Don't believe it for a second.
The areas around college campuses are among the most crime-ridden places in town with frequent arrests for assault, burglary, sexual assault and rape, not to mention thousands of liquor and drug violations, but just a few yards away, on the other side of the campus gate, these kids turn into law-abiding citizens? Yeah, sure.
I plan to add some common sense into this debate when my written testimony is entered on Thursday morning. I will simply use a few incidents my students discovered: student crime victims prevented from filing reports on technicalities etc. I also plan to describe in detail the numerous national investigations that found that camps safety officers were deliberately covering up their crime numbers so they don't interfere with college marketing plans. "No crimes here! Trust us! Would we lie to you?"
The problem for college administrators is that their credibility is reaching an all-time low and legislators are no longer willing to believe them just because they have a lot of letters after their name, You can only get away with a lie for so long and the evidence is now strongly against them.
